Riobamba is the capital of the province of Chimborazo. From the city, it is possible organize excursions to the surrounding mountains. In Riobamba, which has a strong English influence, one encounters indigenous people, mestizos, and a minority of whites.

Mothers 'concepts' and Maldonado school are interesting places to visit. The history of this city bears the fact that it is the connection point between the coast and the mountains. In 1830, when Ecuador seceded from Gran Colombia, the city of Riobamba was elected to sign the First Constitution of the new republic. Today, the train is no longer a major means of transport, but it is a unique tourist attraction. From Riobamba station, the train leaves the most impressive railway route through the "Avenue of the Volcanoes", ending up in the "Devil's Nose." Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador to 6310 meters above sea level, and its flad of two shelters located. Carrel hut, at 4800 meters, is easily accessible by road ballast. From there you can reach the Whymper refuge in an hour. The refuge serves as a base for climbers who want to crown the summit of Chimborazo.
