Refugio del Pichincha volcano Mitad del Mundo Ethnographic Museum and Chimborazo Riobamba
Inside the monument to the Equator out a Museum Ethnographic museum thanks to the contributions of the Central Bank of Ecuador and for the benefit of the thousands of national and foreign tourists who visit every year.
The museum consists of nine levels, ground floor and a balcony. The tour starts on the ground floor, where it shows an overview of the human, geographic and economic life, as well as the different countries in the world that are crossed by the equator. In a room
presents a sample of the varied flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands Region through dioramas. In another, there is an electrical panel with map and pictures which describe the location geographical each ethnic group in Ecuador.
After the visit of the ground floor, visitors are directed by an elevator to the lookout, where you can see the hill Cate-keel with 3,632 meters. Behind him on a clear day you can see the snowcapped Cayambe to 5,790 meters. Both elevations also crossed by the Equator. On top of the Cate-keel found a circular ceremonial structure, formerly used by the Pre-Incas as a temple of worship to the moon.
Then, visitors descend into the monument, the ninth level representing the Coast: with Chachi and Afro-Esmeralda; in the eighth level with the staging of a beach and Fisherman Cholo canoe, and Tsátchilas montubios Santo Domingo de los Colorados.
Continuing decline in the Museum exhibits Chota blacks with other members of traditional communities in the province of Imbabura: Otavaleños, Zuleta, Natabuela, etc.
In the sixth level space for the Pichincha Province customs and traditions of rural areas. Then on stage appear Cotopaxi and Tungurahua groups with Chibuleo Salasacas and engaged in farming and handicrafts. Down to the fourth level, greater space for the indigenous population, the province of Chimborazo. Also observed customs and festivities of the Province of Bolivar. In the third level exhibits and crafts tradition of the inhabitants of the provinces of Canar, Azuay and Loja.
The second level is for the indigenous nations of the East as Cofan, Quichua, Siona-Sequoia and Huaorani. The sample on this site offers large-format photographs of these ethnic groups in the Ecuadorian rainforest. At the first level seen at the homes of mythical warriors Shuar and Achuar.
